Chapter 17: Countdown to Extreme Cold

Train Mobile

Lin Mo's heart skipped a beat. Finally, she could move the train? Did that mean her range of activity was also unlocked?

[Train Mobile Status]: Can be spatially folded. Each move consumes 15kg of energy materials, with a maximum movement distance of 1km per move and a cooldown of 24 hours.

In other words, she could consume energy materials to silently move the train 1km. Unless she entered the train, no one would notice its presence.

This was indeed a great tool for concealment and relocation—teleporting to a target location without a trace. But if she really wanted to leave S City, moving such a short distance each time would take forever.

[Train drivable status]: Driving speed 15km/h, consumes 15kg of energy materials per hour. Spatial folding is not available while driving.

So if she chose to drive the train, it would be exposed to public view.

Lin Mo sighed, pressing her forehead. Her current energy materials were only enough to drive 150km. The energy was needed both for driving and for powering the train—it was a drain on both ends. No wonder there were Train Conductors soliciting gasoline donations.

Thinking of how the solar power generator had been stored in the carriage but the system panel showed no response, not even an installation trigger, Lin Mo couldn't help but sigh. Maybe it was because there had been no sun recently? At least it could have contributed something to the power supply!

Now these bulky items could only be crammed into the first carriage, pressed tightly against the lazy bean bag, making her OCD flare up.

"I need to find a new place to stay soon," Lin Mo muttered to herself as she efficiently organized the stockpile.

There was no choice. The current rental was too small, and the train had severely compressed her living space. The yard and living room couldn't hold anything; the bedroom, dining room, kitchen, and the train itself were all cramped. Especially inside the train, there was no room for a bed. If she stayed home, her living space would be too narrow.

But she couldn't move far. Each move consumed energy, and she had to wait 24 hours for the cooldown. She couldn't just drive the train under the cover of night, could she?

The train's appearance was too conspicuous, and with all the surveillance cameras and satellite monitoring, driving it out would make it a glaring target—a sure way to get caught.

She immediately pulled out her phone and set an alarm to remind herself to text the agent Sister Zhao on WeChat tomorrow morning to find a new place. Sister Zhao had found this apartment for her. Although the agency fee was a bit high, she was reliable and always accurately matched Lin Mo's needs without requiring much explanation.

First, she unboxed the fruits and neatly placed them into the second Basic Locker. The boxes took up too much space otherwise.

Then she placed the crates of corn, tomatoes, greens, cucumbers, and beans into the third Basic Locker. These crates of vegetables were already compacted, so there was no need to take them out.

"Strange. The AI said one cubic meter could hold 800-900 jin of root vegetables, but I only put in a little over 100 jin, and it feels like half is already full?"

That left only the fourth Basic Locker empty. With basic survival needs met, she started thinking about stocking up on tasty treats, like the strawberries, cherries, and blueberries she craved, and even some Snowtop milk tea. Although it wasn't hardcore stockpiling, milk tea was delicious and high in calories.

The ribs, beef, roast chicken, and cake from the supermarket were all stuffed into the large-capacity fridge, now finally packed full—a sight that brought her great comfort. Daily necessities like laundry detergent and hand cream were neatly arranged in the wooden cabinets in the bathroom. She also installed a bathroom shelf and placed shampoo, body wash, and conditioner on it.

Across from the sink, she deliberately placed two large storage bins for toiletries and sanitary pads. The new mint-green bathrobe and cat-embroidered pure-cotton pajamas were hung on the wooden coat rack by the sink. Once the water and electricity were connected, this would be a perfect bathroom.

Lin Mo yawned softly and rubbed her sore arms, but looking at the day's results, she felt deeply satisfied. Just as she was about to wash up and settle into bed, she suddenly received a system notification.

[Task: Build a simple train shelter within four days]

[Task Reward: Train water supply and drainage system]

Finally, a new task had arrived.

But unlike the previous guided beginner tasks, this formal task's requirements were too vague, without any specific criteria. Yet the reward was truly generous—the train's water supply and drainage system, an absolute necessity, a real godsend.

She glanced at the time. Exactly midnight.

Lin Mo stared at the cold numbers on the screen—"Countdown to Snow Erosion: 95 hours 59 minutes 59 seconds"—and frowned as she asked the system:

"What counts as a simple train shelter?"

"If I don't complete the formal task, will there be a penalty?"

For the first time, the system actually responded: "Failure to complete the task will result in a deduction of 10% of train supplies."

Lin Mo almost choked on her breath. She had worked her tail off, running around and spending a fortune on supplies, and now they could just be deducted?

Unwilling to give up, she pressed the system again:

"What exactly counts as a simple train shelter?"

But the only reply was the system panel's dead silence.

Fine. The system had gone back to its aloof mode. This lousy system only showed a hint of intelligence when triggering tasks—its sensitivity was worse than an ordinary AI, which would at least obediently reply, "I'm here."

No choice. She had to figure it out herself. Lin Mo sifted through her memories of the beginner tasks, from initial survival supplies to construction materials for train functions, to energy materials for power and heat, and finally to cold-weather insulation. Step by step, it all revolved around survival.

Still uneasy, she pulled up her stockpile spreadsheet on her phone and double-checked it. Following the beginner task guidelines, she added a few more items to avoid missing anything crucial for building the shelter.

Before bed, she couldn't resist scrolling through her phone. On Xiaohongshu, she spotted a trending hashtag at the top: #AmericaTrainHitsPersonCase#. It was ranked low but showed rising popularity.

In the footage, a futuristic silver carriage rampaged through the city, unhindered, causing pedestrians to scream. Police sirens pierced the air, but the train remained arrogant, relying on its unnatural hardness to easily smash police cars, leaving a trail of devastation.

Even more shocking, it smashed straight through a building, causing the entire structure to collapse, with panicked people fleeing in all directions.

The comments section buzzed with discussion: "What kind of black technology is this? The building collapsed but it came out unscathed!"

"It's AI, right? Anyone who believes that must be an idiot. What train has floating blue particles around it?"

"This thing looks so fake, yet it's trending? Might as well go read Yanyan stories on Zhihu."

Lin Mo stared at the screen, her expression grim. Foreign countries had always been lax on energy and construction regulations, so it was no wonder this Train Conductor had stockpiled enough construction materials to expand into a long train and hoarded enough energy to keep driving.

But some people raised under "happy education" acted recklessly, with no respect for life or order.

Did these arrogant Train Conductors think they could hide inside their train carriages forever?
