Pink Giant Rabbit
Yun Mi had once wondered what kind of person the universally acknowledged goddess of Shancheng University Affiliated Middle School would be. So this was it.
Life as cheap as grass, yet risking life for life.
The evening gathering went smoothly.
On the TV hanging on the restaurant wall, a match was being broadcast. The small window had blurry picture quality. A group of boys and girls were originally chatting about awkward moments during rehearsal but were inexplicably drawn to the match. Finally, when the Chinese team won, they erupted into wild cheers: "That was awesome! The attack with the sword!"
A passing staff member couldn't help glancing over and smiling along.
Yun Mi held her aluminum can, watching the person on the screen raising their hands high. She lowered her eyes.
On her phone screen, there was an unread message.
It was from Chen Yiyang.
y2: A bit busy.
y2: Come back on your own.
The light in Yun Mi's eyes dimmed, her heart feeling dull and astringent. She didn't even have the energy to reply.
Xie Yue was still at the table, boasting with spittle flying everywhere. He inadvertently looked up and saw Yun Mi leaving the table alone in the night.
He immediately slapped his thigh and exaggeratedly exclaimed, "Holy crap, Yun Mi isn't drunk, is she? Someone can get drunk on Rio?"
A few classmates chimed in with laughter, teasing, "No way, that little alcohol content is like soda."
Ding Yuan ran over worriedly, waving a hand in front of Yun Mi.
The girl just calmly looked up and glared at her without speaking.
"..."
Xie Yue laughed so hard he slapped his leg. He casually raised his phone and took a video of the girl looking listless, sending it directly to Chen Yiyang, followed by a gloating voice message: "Brother Yang, hahaha, I'm dying of laughter. Someone actually got drunk on Rio!"
When the message arrived, Chen Yiyang was keeping vigil by the hospital bed. His phone screen lit up softly, showing a video of a few people surrounding a girl with her head drooping, facing the camera.
He calmly slipped the phone back into his pocket, stood up, and said softly to his grandfather, "I'm leaving now."
The old man was used to chatting with him regularly and looked somewhat surprised. "What's the matter? Something urgent at school?"
Chen Yiyang's Adam's apple bobbed slightly, but he only said flatly, "Nothing much."
Yun Mi had said earlier that she would get drunk, but he knew it was just a casual lie. Who gets drunk on a bottle of Rio?
Until Xie Yue's voice message came in, his laughter almost choking: "Brother Yang, you know what? Yun Mi didn't even finish a whole bottle—just half! Xu Zhiyu bought it, and Da Yuan Zi told her to stop drinking, but she guarded it like treasure, saying she couldn't waste it."
Chen Yiyang had already walked out of the hospital. The subway sped through the city night, billboards flashing backward outside the window. Chen Yiyang saw his reflection in the glass.
The boy leaned by the silver pillar, the corner of his mouth twitching under his gray-black cap.
He dialed a call, his voice calm: "What's going on there?"
Xie Yue was still in a jovial mood, looking confused. "What do you mean? Just finished eating, still messing around."
"No trouble?"
"Are you cursing us? Of course not."
Chen Yiyang's eyelids drooped slightly, and he made a cool judgment: "Looks like something did happen."
Xie Yue was baffled by his questioning and inexplicably a bit irritated. Just as he was about to curse, the call was hung up cleanly.
Chen Yiyang had initially taken care of Yun Mi for Wen Liangyu's sake.
For his mother, who had long drifted apart from him.
Chen Yiyang felt guilty toward her, and the whole Chen family felt guilty.
So as long as Yun Mi didn't go too far, he mostly went along with her.
But now, things seemed to have crossed a line.
The boy pressed down his cap, covering his dark eyes half-hidden by stray hair.
Just now, while talking to his grandfather, he saw at a glance that Yun Mi was unhappy.
She was about to cry.
...
Most of the classmates had already left.
Yun Mi was correcting Ding Yuan, insisting she "wasn't drunk."
Ding Yuan teased her, blocking her: "Only drunk people say they're not drunk."
"I'm really not drunk!"
"Okay, okay, you're not drunk."
Yun Mi wasn't much of a drinker, but she really wasn't drunk—just a bit dizzy, plus her heart felt heavy, and she didn't want to talk.
The girl kept her eyes down, scrolling through hot news on her phone.
