In the early morning, a rainy mist hung over Lower Manhattan, carriages streamed endlessly along Dover Street, the sound of wheels splashing through water constant.
Jenny had already gotten out of bed, put on her shoes, and poured hot water from the kettle on the stove. She washed her face in the bathroom, then came out to the living room to make a cup of coffee.
Although this dormitory building had been renovated, the rooms were partitioned off with thin walls, so you could hear noise from both sides. As soon as the neighbors on either side woke up and started moving around, Jenny was inevitably woken up—there was no risk of oversleeping.
