The atmosphere in the office was off. Even Mr. York next door, who usually loved to snack, didn't send anyone out for errands. Jenny observed the situation, returned to her seat, and sat down to review the manuscripts received today. She knew that at critical moments like this, her own work must be flawless. If she made a mistake now, she would be the one singled out as a scapegoat. Polly, across from her, saw that Jenny still had the heart to do those tedious, grinding tasks at a time like this and couldn't understand what was going on in Jenny's mind. Polly was hoping that Sharpe's downfall would take a few typists down with him, leaving an opening for her. She thought that, if nothing else, her typing and proofreading were quite excellent...
Jenny was working when the soft click of a metal hinge sounded in the office. Frank walked out from the inner room. Behind him came Mr. Eliot, along with a dejected-looking Cowens. Then Eliot walked up to Jenny and said, "From now on, Cowens will take over your work." Jenny looked up blankly, glanced at Frank, then at the editor. "Then what will I do?" "From now on, Ronald will replace Cowens. You'll swap job duties with Ronald." Ronald's original job was as a clerk handling accepted manuscripts and other miscellaneous tasks for Mr. Eliot. He had been temporarily pulled away to help. "Well... okay." Jenny took a moment to react, realizing what had happened in the office. She looked over and just caught a glimpse of Fujena leaning smugly outside the partition. No need to think—this was stirred up right in front of her. Jenny had actually turned misfortune into good fortune. Eliot instructed Jenny. "Today, you'll hand over work with Cowens and Ronald. I'll assign you new tasks tomorrow." Jenny nodded.
