Jenny lowered her head, her heart stirring with eagerness. To avoid seeming too impatient, she stuffed a few spoonfuls of mashed potatoes into her mouth.
Frank watched her from across the table. If it were anyone else, they would have long settled for being a dutiful wife, never aspiring to be an assistant editor. He didn't know why Jenny had such an obsession, nor whether it was good or bad. He recalled their first meeting—it was because of her ambition that she had barged into the office pretending to be a clerk for the monthly magazine. Otherwise, they would never have met. Perhaps that was a good thing. If she had been with any other man, one without ability, he would not have tolerated such an unconventional woman.
After dinner, Frank escorted Jenny back to near her dormitory.
