Chapter 36

In the office, the new clerks, after their interviews and paperwork, came to their respective supervisors to receive assignments.

Emme was two years younger than Jenny, seventeen this year, having just graduated from a shorthand school. She had a nice face with a few freckles on her nose, wore an indigo cotton dress, and looked around curiously at Jenny's workspace. She was young, very lively, and had the best fundamentals among the batch of interviewees; she hadn't been flustered when answering Eliot's questions.

Jenny had no work to assign her today, so she considerately told her to go pack her luggage first. Emme was curious about having a supervisor like Jenny; she left the office, returned to the dormitory building, and moved into the room Polly had originally occupied. Polly, in turn, moved into the typist's single room today.
