In the hall, the fireplace was burning wood, the warm yellow light shielded by a mesh screen to prevent sparks. Servants walked around the house holding gift boxes. Soon, the butler directed them to load all the items ordered from the department store onto the cart and send them off.

In the small hall next to the hall, Jenny sat at the writing desk. After reading the note from Cowens, she wrote a letter arranging for him to do more investigative work to see what was happening in the office. The servants were busy with the engagement ceremony. To prevent being beaten by her brother and father when going to her home, Zweit had prepared several generous gifts in advance. Jenny's father, brother, and brother-in-law were all farm men.
