Chapter 45

After the party that day, there was only one ten-day period left until the end-of-month bonus evaluation day.

During the transition from spring to summer, the daytime sun began to warm up. Jenny's dormitory was stuffy and damp. Every morning when she woke up, her body felt sticky, so she had to get up at dawn to take a cold shower.

Even though she got up so early, she would always find that Emme had already fetched a bucket of water and placed it at her door without her knowing when.

At first, Jenny didn't allow her to do this, saying that flattery was not as useful as doing more work. But Emme didn't want to be just a subordinate; she was determined to become Jenny's apprentice and learn skills from her. So Jenny stopped refusing and only gave Emme some money each week to buy cold drinks on South Street.

As a clerk, Emme mainly learned to edit manuscripts and polish them. Jenny always had Emme bring a chair and sit beside her to watch when she was revising drafts. On ordinary days, she would go to the library to fetch a few excellent works for Emme to study.
