The morning in New York carried a chill; slanting wind and rain beat against the windows, coating the glass in a layer of mist, as if autumn were just around the corner.
When Jenny woke, it was already bright. The space beside her was empty—only a deep dent on the pillow remained, along with the lingering scent in the room, as if last night had been nothing but a spring dream.
She got up, drew the curtains, and pushed open the window. The cold air rushed in, sending a shiver through her.
Jenny heard a knock at the door. She went out and received a cardboard box of clothes. Opening it, she found a striped serge dress from the tailor's, along with a box of leather shoes and a silk scarf.
After admiring and dressing herself, she took a carriage to the company, barely making it before the clock-in deadline.
Back in her office, Jenny noticed the boss's door at the end of the hall was open, which puzzled her. Since he had arrived so early, why hadn't he woken her?
