When the play ended, New York was caught in a heavy downpour. The whole world was shrouded in gloom, and rainwater pooled in the streets like a mirror, reflecting the golden light of gas lamps from the windows of buildings.
Frank bought an umbrella and walked with Jenny to the restaurant next door, knowing she hadn't eaten much in the evening. After watching the play, his mood had calmed considerably. He turned to look at Jenny, who remained calm, showing none of the grief of a denied love or the resentment of a misunderstood person.
Frank felt an emptiness inside, but he still apologized on behalf of his mother. "It's all right. If I were your mother, I'd think the same way. These things take time."
Jenny hadn't expected much, so she wasn't disappointed now. Seeing the complex look in Frank's eyes, she asked curiously, "What's wrong?"
