Chapter 16

Be good, listen to me. (Three chapters combined)

The man who suddenly appeared before Huangfu Jun had beautiful silver hair and was still wearing a black jacket.

"Captain Bai?" Huangfu Jun finally breathed a sigh of relief. Despite promising a time, he was late—really no sense of punctuality. The only thing that satisfied her was that she could speak directly to Bai Lin in her mind.

"Captain Bai, good evening. Traffic jam?" Hmph, besides you being a pain, who else would cause a jam? Though she was mentally dissing her unpunctual, troublemaking boss, her face remained calm and indifferent.

In Bai Lin's eyes, she looked concerned, spoke softly, with a fine layer of sweat glistening on her forehead under the orange streetlight. Her eyes were moist and bright, her stray hairs fluffy, like a little orange cat.

Seeing a beauty under the light was hazy and dreamy. The vitality of youth and gentle understanding blended into a unique charm. This glimpse made him momentarily distracted. It had only been a few years since they parted, yet it felt so long that he didn't know how to face her.

Did he miss her? Of course, he never stopped. Did he hate her? This hatred lingered endlessly. A flicker of irritation crossed his brow. He turned away bitterly, ignoring Huangfu Jun's question.

Huangfu Jun: ? She blinked in confusion. Was she being given the cold shoulder and rejected? Him? Late dog! Still had the nerve? Rejected?? I must stay calm, reflect on myself. Am I being too nice to him? Just because he has a handsome face, he's so rude? Did his nine years of compulsory education go to the dogs? Oh, right, I almost forgot—the late dog never had compulsory education.

Seeing that Bai Lin had no intention of talking to her, even turning and walking to the white motorcycle, Huangfu Jun's patience finally wore thin. She stood still and called out again, "Captain?"

As soon as she spoke, she quickly covered her mouth. That voice wasn't in her mind—it had actually come out! She couldn't believe it, covering her mouth and tried again. "Ah..."

Bai Lin turned at the sound and saw Huangfu Jun's shocked and delighted expression. His eyes narrowed as he looked her over with a disdainful gaze, like she was an idiot. "It's just an illusion. You haven't recovered." Then he turned back, grabbed the handlebars, swung his long leg over, and sat on the motorcycle. The whole motion was fluid and handsome—long legs, narrow waist, pleasing to the eye.

Retracting all previous complaints, even a demon who could temporarily restore her ability to speak was a super "good person" among great demons!

Covering her mouth, Huangfu Jun blinked at Bai Lin's back, waiting for him to explain further. Even without turning around, Bai Lin could feel the sparkling aura emanating from Huangfu Jun. He pressed his lips together, finally softening, though his voice remained cold, as if full of impatience. "I can't stand the sound of the phone. I cast a spell to let you speak when you're near me. Your voice hasn't recovered; you still can't talk to others."

Having been mute for two years, Huangfu Jun hadn't fully adjusted to normal speech. She cautiously opened her mouth, as if afraid the miracle would vanish. Her lips moved slightly as she whispered, "That... that's more than enough! Thank you, Captain. You don't know how painful it is to lose something you once had. Regaining it, even temporarily, is happier than winning the lottery! Thank you, Captain Bai!"

Bai Lin sneered inwardly, "Scream in pain as you lose repeatedly!" But when his gaze accidentally met her grateful and sincere eyes, the malice raging in his heart was caught off guard. He was momentarily flustered, averting his gaze. "Get on!"

He twisted the throttle, and the exhaust roared. Huangfu Jun muttered excitedly to herself a few times, calmed down a bit, and walked toward Bai Lin. Tonight was a happy night! She could fulfill her dream of flying, regain her voice, and her grandmother's living conditions had greatly improved. Compared to that, the unknown dangers were nothing. She was glad she had chosen to join the Monster Bureau.

Approaching the motorcycle, she avoided grabbing Bai Lin's arm, supporting herself on the back seat to swing on. Once seated, she reached back to find a handhold. Though she was usually bold, being so close to a stranger—especially a male superior—made her awkward and uneasy. The closer she got, the stronger his unique scent became. Cool, like the proudest plum blossom scent in winter—fresh, refreshing, irresistible.

Sensing her stiffness, Bai Lin turned his head slightly and said coldly, "Sit tight."

Huangfu Jun gritted her teeth. After all, he wasn't human. If she didn't hold on tight during the flight, she might be thrown off. More importantly, their mission wasn't ordinary human business; being too reserved would cause trouble. "Okay, Captain Bai, I'll hold onto you." Before she finished speaking, her hands landed on his waist.

Bai Lin gripped the handlebars tightly, his voice a bit muffled. "Fifteen minutes, nearly a thousand kilometers. In this position, if you're thrown off, I won't come back for you."

Huangfu Jun's mind took a different turn. "Captain Bai, a big white motorcycle flying at night—won't it be caught on radar? Do you need to buy a flight path? With so many planes in the sky, isn't it dangerous? Also, in this dark and windy night, shouldn't we wear helmets?"

Bai Lin: ... She still had so many questions. Used to see them as strengths, now—well, not exactly flaws.

Huangfu Jun was fully focused on the upcoming flight, and once she started talking, all awkwardness and the issue of a strange male superior flew out the window. "Then I'll take the liberty." She clamped her hands around his narrow waist like pincers.

Bai Lin glanced sideways. He wanted to mock her harshly, but she was so polite, sincere, and frank that targeting her would make him seem petty. Realizing this, his heart tightened inexplicably. He was supposed to take revenge on her, yet two words and a fake hug had him this flustered? He felt even more disgusted with himself.

Huangfu Jun waited for a reply but got none. She pursed her lips and honestly voiced her thoughts. "Captain, this is my first job after graduation. I have no experience. I ask a lot of questions—please bear with me. But it's better to ask more and avoid misunderstandings that could affect work. If you're always silent, I might misinterpret you, and that wouldn't be good for the job." She smiled playfully, her voice soft. "Please take care of this workplace newbie's anxieties, Captain!"

Bai Lin suddenly regretted restoring her voice; he had lost the upper hand. With her mind seemingly formatted, she was now sincere and naive. When she was silent, he could still feel a perverse pleasure, but now she was chattering away like before, sharp-tongued. To avoid more effective attacks, Bai Lin decisively changed the subject.

He leaned forward slightly, assuming a starting position, his voice oddly low and husky. "Hold me tight."

Huangfu Jun nodded decisively. "Got it!" Business first; they'd have plenty of time to communicate later.

Wrapping her arms tightly around Bai Lin's waist, Huangfu Jun widened her eyes in surprise. Ah, this waist—so slim! Mm, this back—so firm! Wow, muscles—hard!

The cool ice-chip scent sobered her increasingly perverse thoughts. "Captain Bai, even if we're flying in the sky, at this speed, shouldn't we wear helmets? Can you conjure two helmets?"

Bai Lin twisted the throttle hard, saying coldly, "Fly? What flying? We're taking the highway. As for helmets, at this speed, no need."

Huangfu Jun: !!! Huangfu Jun: ??? Do you hear yourself? Fifteen minutes, a thousand kilometers, on land via highway? The speed cameras would explode all along the way! And not wearing a helmet at this speed is asking for death! If there's an accident, would there be any human remains left? Wouldn't the traffic cops and forensic doctors be traumatized? I think you shouldn't just tell me to hold on—you should tie me to you!

"Bai—" Huangfu Jun barely got out a syllable before the throttle roared terrifyingly, and the next moment, she and Bai Lin turned into a streak of white light, shooting arrow-straight into the dark night ahead! The word "Captain" lingered in the air.

Huangfu Jun didn't know that behind the Monster Bureau gate, a figure slowly emerged from the shadows. Blue robe, high hair crown—it was the logistics director, Zhang Yu, in human form. Zhang Yu watched the direction Bai Lin and Huangfu Jun had vanished, shaking his head helplessly.

He had witnessed the driverless motorcycle at midnight and Bai Lin's lateness. He couldn't figure out what Bai Lin was thinking. Probably afraid Huangfu Jun would be bullied alone in the bureau, so he broke the rules, flew back from a thousand miles away, and insisted on taking her on the business trip. But his mouth was hard; not only did he not admit it, but at the appointed time, he also delayed to make things difficult for the girl.

Zhang Yu had initially been surprised that Bai Lin had a human or half-demon friend, but seeing Bai Lin's feigned coldness, he tactfully dropped it. Bai Lin usually didn't smile much, but he never pretended to be cold or deliberately made things difficult. He had clearly been waiting at the gate, waiting left and right for her. When she finally came, he hemmed and hawed, reluctant to go out, with an inexplicable anger. From the looks of it, they seemed more like old enemies than old friends.

But poor Bai Lin's antics were like throwing a wink at a blind person—not only ineffective, but it seemed A Mei saw him as an unpunctual, petty senior who lacked manners. He almost ended up making a fool of himself in front of Hamo. The process was unclear, but the outcome was perfect. The only imperfection was that petty look.

Thinking of this, Zhang Yu curled his lips. Interesting, very interesting. Whether it was Bai Lin and A Mei's past grudges or future chaos, it was damn intriguing. Tsk tsk, look at that petty constipated expression—want to see, love to see, see more. That petty mouth was like a clam, impossible to pry open, but meeting A Mei, the tough-beaked snipe, sooner or later he'd spill, and then he, the fisherman, would reap the benefits. Muhahaha.

Just as he was reveling in the anticipation of future drama, a crackling electronic sound suddenly rang in his ears. Zhang Yu frowned deeply. These damn troublemakers had a bunch of urgent work for him again. With the dense electronic noise, his tall, youthful figure collapsed, his long legs turning into eight tentacles that slapped the ground violently, raising dust and revealing his complete octopus form. When the dust settled, only a few deep grooves remained on the ground.

Fifteen minutes later, somewhere a thousand miles away, in a forest.

A white light shot like a snake-shaped lightning bolt along a newly built road in the woods. Unlike all the roads before, this was an unopened section. The white light flickered and then stopped abruptly.

Huangfu Jun, still gripping Bai Lin's waist, rolled off the motorcycle ungracefully, ran to the roadside, and vomited heavily. Although protected by Bai Lin's demonic aura, her face and hair weren't windblown, but the speed was deadly. The traffic, lights, and scenery flashed by in a blur, the mixed colors making her dizzy and nauseous. After just one minute, she felt her insides churned. Barely lasting fifteen minutes was a miracle.

Seeing Huangfu Jun miserable by the railing, Bai Lin frowned from his seat. He had intended to be worse, but halfway there, hearing her trying to hold back the retching, he stopped his spell halfway. He gritted his teeth—this wasn't mercy; he was afraid she'd vomit on him and the bike!

He pulled out the key, straightened up, swung his long leg over, and got off gracefully. Without looking back, he walked ahead, leaving a cold remark, "Follow me. The barrier will close soon." With a wave, the flashy white motorcycle dissipated like dust in the night wind.

"Vomit all you want. I won't hand you any tissue," Bai Lin thought, patting himself on the back for this performance.

On the other side, wiping her mouth and recovering a bit, Huangfu Jun saw this and twitched. This dog of a boss not only had no consideration for his subordinates but also was showing off to the point that greasy juice nearly splattered on her.

Huangfu Jun couldn't help but roll her eyes. She tried to step forward but found her legs weak. A mirror-like door emitting green light appeared ahead of Bai Lin, and he walked through, disappearing. The door then began to fade, as if about to vanish.

Huangfu Jun almost cursed. In three seconds, a hundred-meter sprint—even Bolt possessed couldn't make it! The door shrank, and she gritted her teeth. So what if it was Bolt? She had special abilities, she could surpass him! She crouched and gathered strength, ready to activate her power. But as she took the first step, her whole body suddenly lightened, as if an invisible force pushed her back. This force threw off her balance, sending her flying like a cannonball. Just as the door flickered and was about to disappear, she crashed through it with a trail of sparks and lightning.

Bang! "Ow, damn it!" Sharp pain instantly brought tears to Huangfu Jun's eyes. She couldn't help cursing. Before her, a pair of feet walked leisurely. The shiny leather boots even reflected her pathetic state. Looking up along the long legs, it was her immediate boss, Captain Bai Lin!

She sprang up. Vicious, too vicious! His intention was all too obvious! Forget the favor earlier; now he was a dog, too much of a dog! Apart from restoring her voice, he was deliberately making things difficult for her, right? His true form must be a white dog with a black heart!
