Chapter 18 (2)

Bai Lin suddenly asked a strange question. "Do you know why I summoned this lanternfish?"

"What?"

Huangfu Jun looked up in surprise, not understanding what Bai Lin meant.

He didn't answer, just gave her a mysterious smile.

Then the lanternfish suddenly stopped, paused for a moment, and then accelerated abruptly, darting forward!

Before Huangfu Jun could react, the lanternfish exploded into a cloud of white smoke far ahead. The smoke spread, and every tiny particle emitted light, like a sky full of fireworks falling.

Where the light fell, the scene suddenly changed. From pitch-black darkness, it turned into a busy construction site bathed in daylight.

"The tunnel was built later, just to repair the space-time rift. This is the actual site," he explained solemnly, once again unable to resist showing off in front of her.

Huangfu Jun's breath caught. "So this is a playback of the surveillance?"

Bai Lin didn't answer, because the scene in front was becoming clearer.

They began to see various demons using magic to transport building materials. Most of these demons weren't in human form. There were all kinds of strange shapes: some had the head of an ox but the body of a lion, using huge horns to dig foundation trenches; others were cockroaches as tall as a man, carrying sandbags ten times their own size on their backs.

Huangfu Jun's jaw nearly dropped. The life of beast-of-burden demons in the demon world was too realistic.

"They aren't building an ordinary construction site. Those building materials are infused with special magic; each piece is a fragment of the space-time wall.

Materialized into physical form, it helps the demon workers repair it on schedule, in order."

Huangfu Jun nodded and began searching among the busy demons for the one that had rebelled.

She scanned but didn't see the black python. Instead, she found a handsome man in human form.

Clad in black clothes and boots, he was using magic to construct a high-rise building.

Huangfu Jun's eyes lit up. The handsome man had black hair, green eyes, a beauty mark at the corner of his eye, and excellent facial features. He was very striking.

He was handsome and had a good temper. When a small demon weak in magic fell while carrying materials, he quickly finished his own work and went to help.

The fallen demon was a thin little boy. He seemed hurt, tears and snot pouring out.

Huangfu Jun asked curiously, "Captain Bai, what kind of demon is that child?"

"Bo Qi."

That's it? Huangfu Jun waited for more, but saw Bai Lin look at her with that disappointing-student expression again, his mouth twitching.

Just a name? What is Bo Qi? I know 'Boqi' is a dog from English class.

But the name sounded familiar. She suddenly thought of something and asked hesitantly, "Is that the divine beast Bo Qi from the Classic of Mountains and Seas that can eat people's nightmares?"

Bai Lin nodded with slight satisfaction, as if hearing a poor student finally give the right answer. "To be precise, it's a weakened descendant of Bo Qi."

Huangfu Jun grew more curious. "What's its original form?"

Among the accident list, there was indeed Bo Qi.

Here it comes again—that disappointed look like he was looking at an empty-headed poor student.

Huangfu Jun racked her brain. Suddenly remembering Bai Lin's earlier words, "they were all eaten," her expression changed.

"Is there only one Bo Qi at the site?" she asked, unwilling to give up.

"Yes."

Looking at the pitiful little boy, Huangfu Jun's mood sank.

He was also eaten by the python demon.

"I saw in the files that the escaped python demon is named Hei Zhe. Where is it now?"

Bai Lin gestured with his chin forward. "The one helping Bo Qi up."

Huangfu Jun was astonished. It was him?

Before she could think further, the scene changed again.

After Hei Zhe helped Bo Qi up, another demon bumped into his back, nearly causing Bo Qi to fall again.

Then a group of demons gathered, attracted by the disturbance.

Several strong ones started shoving Bo Qi and Hei Zhe.

Huangfu Jun clicked her tongue. Demon construction site prisons also have bullying, just like in movies.

"Why are they bullying Hei Zhe and Bo Qi?"

Bai Lin replied, "Because they can connect with humans."

Huangfu Jun looked at him incredulously. "Isn't the Monster Bureau site a prison? Can they still contact the outside world?"

"No," Bai Lin said firmly. "But some demons can accidentally synchronize with humans, leading to spiritual communication. For example, over a decade ago, a little girl accidentally released her spiritual body in a lotus field and broke into the completely sealed barrier of a white dragon god."

Huangfu Jun's brow twitched slightly.

Lotus field? She happened to have lived near a lotus field with her grandmother for a few years as a child.
