Chapter 23 (3)

Ji Xingzhi wasn't afraid when he was a soldier, but he was now, because it would be meaningless. He was honest. "I am. But I'm even more afraid of dying right now."

Bo Xin understood. "So you don't trust me?"

Ji Xingzhi ran his hand through his hair, remembering the evening's events and almost laughing. "It's hard to trust a doctor who doesn't even know where the kidneys are."

Bo Xin: "..."

Had she shot herself in the foot? This was what they call reputation damage—and she did it to herself. Fine. Bo Xin put her tools back in place, seeing Ji Xingzhi sit up, muscles tensed. "Don't worry, I won't come up again tonight."

Jiang Yuxu and Ji Yanyi slept in the same bed, but Jiang Yuxu couldn't fall asleep at all. One moment he was held tight like by an octopus, the next the blanket was snatched away, leaving him exposed to drafts. He thought he'd take back the word "good" and decided never to sleep with someone who had bad sleeping posture and hugged people in their sleep. What was he in their dreams—a life-sized plush toy?

Just after dawn, Jiang Yuxu sat up, planning to have breakfast. He met Ji Xingzhi's gaze; he seemed not to have slept well either. After drinking a glass of hot milk, it seemed that was his entire breakfast. "What's up with you?"

Ji Xingzhi sighed. "It's a long story. What about you?"

"Mine's a long story too."

Ji Xingzhi poured himself another glass of milk. "Then cheers to that." It was a habit he'd picked up from foreigners, meaning "we're in the same boat."

Soon, Bo Xin also got up, and so did Ji Yanyi, who had class today and couldn't sleep in.

Hu Fangyue stood downstairs to see them off, having something to tell Bo Xin. "Take care of the matters about Yuxu's rural side."

Bo Xin nodded. She had been handling a lawsuit because the other side kept demanding money, getting hysterical. But neither Yuxu nor Yanyi had asked a single word about it. Clearly, they believed their fate was none of their concern.

Hu Fangyue had another point to remind her. She doubted her daughter had thought of this. The child had been back for a while now. "Remember to take Yuxu to change his surname. How can he still be called Jiang after coming home? It makes him look like an outsider."

Bo Xin felt that Yuxu was already used to his name; changing it didn't matter. "That's not important."

Hu Fangyue was a bit annoyed. "If that's not important, then what is in your eyes?"

Bo Xin showed Hu Fangyue the time. "The child will be late for school. That's pretty important to me."

Hu Fangyue paused, then sighed helplessly.

Beside them, Jiang Yuxu's eyelids lifted, his ears perked up. His name came up in his loved ones' conversation, and he couldn't help but eavesdrop. It happened to be quiet around.

"Actually, changing my surname is fine. I don't want to be surnamed Jiang." He didn't want to share a surname with Jiang Cuijuan. As for his foster parents, they weren't surnamed Jiang either. The previous generation was lazy and cunning, adopting an honest child from somewhere just to support the family.

Bo Xin naturally listened to the child's opinion. But she thought carefully for a long time. "The key is that 'Ji Yuxu' doesn't sound good either." Surely they couldn't change his entire name.

"I don't want to be surnamed Ji either."

This little thought was now laid bare. Bo Xin smirked slightly. "Then take my surname and be 'Bo Yuxu.'"

Bo Yuxu? It did sound nice. And indeed, one child surnamed Ji and one surnamed Bo would make them look more like a family.

"Then when you have time, I'll take you to get it changed."
