Chapter 6

006 Do You Think I'm Easy to Fool?

Fang Yu's face looked even paler than usual. She forced a smile. "My stomach hurts a bit. Maybe it's a stomach problem acting up."

Wang Chunyue turned to rummage through the medicine cabinet. "I have some stomach medicine..."

Fang Yu covered her stomach and walked toward the bed, her movements slightly unsteady. "No need. I'll be fine after lying down for a bit."

Zeng Keqin frowned. Fang Yu didn't look like she had a stomachache—it seemed more like... fear.

"So what happened to his friend in the end? Did he call the police?"

Wang Chunyue nudged her with her elbow, eager to continue gossiping.

Zeng Keqin retracted her gaze. "The police have been notified. The case is currently under investigation."

Liu Ying suddenly spoke up. "You're studying law, right? In a situation like this, how many years would the sentence be?"

"This is a typical case of online fraud. According to Article 266 of the Criminal Law, if the amount involved is between three thousand and thirty thousand yuan, the sentence is up to three years' imprisonment, criminal detention, or public surveillance, along with a fine. If it's between thirty thousand and five hundred thousand yuan, the sentence is three to ten years' imprisonment..."

Fang Yu, lying on the bed, stirred and turned over, but her back exuded a faint sense of unease.

*

In the following days, Zeng Keqin felt as though a pair of eyes was intentionally or unintentionally fixed on her. Every time she looked up, no one was there.

This sense of being watched clung to her like a shadow, sending chills down her spine.

Fortunately, a piece of good news dispelled some of her unease.

"Wow! Qinqin, congratulations on passing the retest and becoming a trainee lawyer at Bai Run'er!"

Wang Chunyue cheered and screamed, as if she wanted the whole floor to know.

Zeng Keqin corrected her precisely. "I'm still in the evaluation phase; I haven't passed yet. In a month, Bai Run'er will select the two most suitable candidates from the six of us to become official interns."

"Big companies are such a hassle!" Wang Chunyue frowned, then quickly encouraged, "But you're so capable, you'll definitely pass the assessment!"

Liu Ying rarely chimed in. "You've won scholarships every year. What's there to be afraid of?"

Zeng Keqin's gaze inadvertently swept over Fang Yu, who was looking down at her phone.

Fang Yu seemed to be deliberately avoiding eye contact as she stared at the screen. "Exactly. You'll definitely be fine."

If Zeng Keqin's suspicion was fifty percent before, it was now sixty.

Without evidence, she wouldn't act rashly.

Her phone suddenly vibrated.

She looked down and saw an avatar of a golden retriever holding a sunflower in its mouth—

[Xiaoke, congratulations on passing the retest too! [Fireworks] [Fireworks] [Fireworks]]

Zeng Keqin was a bit surprised. [How did you find out?]

Mengmeng: [Hehe, when I got the call from HR, I asked a little extra~]

Mengmeng: [Want to grab a meal together to celebrate?]

This person was way too familiar.

[No need...]

Just as Zeng Keqin typed those two characters, another message popped up.

[After we eat, we can go to the mall and pick out some clothes for work. Oh, and I know who else passed. Want to hear about it? I can tell you while we eat.]

Zeng Keqin paused.

As the saying goes, know yourself and know your enemy, and you'll never be defeated. Knowing your competitors' strengths early on couldn't hurt.

[What time and where?]

[5 PM, Zone A of Times Square!]

*Xiaozhu Private Kitchen*

This private kitchen was located inside the mall but remained quiet and secluded, with a unique style. It had a simple and elegant exterior, following a modern Chinese aesthetic.

A waiter at the door enthusiastically greeted them. "Do you have a reservation?"

Qiao Meng directly handed her a card.

The waiter took a look and became more respectful. "Please follow me."

Inside, it was a different world—rockeries, flowing water, quiet and serene, each step filled with poetic imagery.

The waiter led them to a private room. "If you need anything, feel free to press the button on the table, and someone will assist you."

Zeng Keqin loved this kind of quiet, private environment and couldn't help but ask softly, "Do you come here often?"

Qiao Meng flipped through the menu and answered casually, "Not really, about two or three times a year. My uncle knows the owner and gave me a VIP card."

Zeng Keqin nodded and didn't ask further.

Qiao Meng closed the menu and handed it to her. "I've ordered a few of my favorites. You can pick the rest."

"Okay."
