Chapter 58: Scheme

"You died a worthy death."

There was nothing much to do at Baiwei Tower in the morning, so Di Yao took Yuan Hui up Golden Rooster Mountain. Though she hadn't been there in months, the mountain was still the same—the golden chickens pecked at anyone who came near, but they never got close to Di Yao.

Yuan Hui had agreed to go, but he was actually terrified. He had been up Golden Rooster Mountain before, and only escaped thanks to his quick feet and the fact that in his past life, aside from being a bit of a libertine, he hadn't done anything truly heinous. Still, a chicken had bitten his backside, and it had hurt for a long time.

So when he saw the golden chickens automatically veer away from Di Yao, his eyes nearly popped out of his head. He stuck close behind her, refusing to let go no matter what. Di Yao had no choice but to slow her pace.

She ignored Yuan Hui's suggestion to just catch a chicken and instead wandered slowly along the mountain, hoping to find some stray eggs. On Golden Rooster Mountain, it was always a case of "too many monks, too little gruel," so there was no shortage of vicious infighting among the chicken flocks, including bullies that preyed on the weak. And indeed, Di Yao did find four or five eggs next to a dead chicken, along with a few broken ones. She gathered them all.
